Sexually Transmitted Disease

The Facts about STD's

Most people don't believe they are at risk for a sexually transmitted disease.  The truth is, in 2015, there were 65 cases of Chlamydia, one case of Gonorrhea, and one case of Syphilis treated in Yates County.

One in two sexually active young people will get a sexually transmitted disease (STD) by the age of twenty-five.  The good news is that most STD's are curable and all are treatable. To learn more about STD's visit: http://www.cdc.gov/std/prevention/default.htm.

How can you reduce your risk of getting and STD?

  • The only way to avoid STDs is to not have vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

If you are sexually active:

  • Be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and has negative STD test results.
  • Use latex condoms the right way every time you have sex.

Wait to have Sex

Choosing not to have sex, or being abstinent, is the only 100% effective way to protect yourself from getting an STD (or from getting pregnant or getting someone else pregnant). Not Ready? It can wait.

It is OK to wait:

  • Most teens are not having sex.
  • More than half of teens who have had sex wish they had waited.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection.  According to the CDC about 14 million new infections occur each year.  The HPV virus causes genital warts, cervical cancer, and oropharyngeal cancer.   Women between the ages of 21 and 65 should be screened for HPV infection.  HPV vaccine is available for both boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 26.  Please contact your medical provider or Yates County Public Health for more information.
